May is Sexual Violence Awareness Month

"SVAM is a month dedicated to raising awareness of sexual violence to all members of our communities, and to highlight the need for support and services to those affected by sexual assault.  Every community in New Brunswick has the power to create a supportive and responsive environment for survivors of sexual violence.  Sexual Violence New Brunswick works with communities, service providers and government throughout the province to address and respond to the issue of sexual violence in New Brunswick. We Stand With Survivors

This year, the Jade Centre (previously known as the South East Sexual Assault Centre) joined the Women’s Sexual Assault Centre of Renfrew County (based in Ontario) in a national campaign to raise awareness of sexual violence in rural areas in Canada for the month of May. In New Brunswick, May is also Sexual Violence Awareness Month.

In South East New Brunswick, you should find our banners, posters and billboards within three municipalities: Fundy-Albert, Memramcook, as well as Maple Hills. With this initiative, we also want to create the outreach so that our rural communities know that we are here to support you, if you or someone you know have experienced sexual violence.

The Jade Centre (formerly the South East Sexual Assault Centre) would like to acknowledge that the land on which we operate our services is the traditional unceded territory of the Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) and Mi’kmaq peoples. This territory is covered by the “Treaties of Peace and Friendship” which Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) and Mi’kmaq peoples first signed with the British Crown in 1725. The treaties did not deal with surrender of lands and resources but in fact recognized Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) titles and established the rules for what was to be an ongoing relationship between nations.
